Travel to the Florida Keys from Europe

Posted by

There’s just something romantic about heading to the Florida Keys, and those who love water-based nature are especially encouraged to make the trip to this beautiful part of the United States for a relaxed stay in an area that often feels like it’s in the middle of the ocean even though it’s an easy drive from the Miami metropolitan area. In fact, Mangrove Marina is conveniently situated less than two hours driving time from Miami and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airports.

How to Travel to the Miami Metropolitan Area

For most, when you travel to Florida Keys from Europe it will involve a flight into Miami International Airport. American Airlines provides a majority of the Europe-to-Miami flights with ones originating in cities such as Barcelona, London, Milan, Madrid and Paris. Other options are provided by airlines such as Aeroflot (Moscow), Aer Lingus (Dublin), Air France (Paris), Austrian Airlines (Vienna), British Airways (London), Lufthansa (Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich), Scandinavian Airlines (Copenhagen and Oslo), TAP Portugal (Lisbon) and Turkish Airlines (Istanbul).

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport also offers a few options for European visitors. Norwegian Air Shuttle provides the most flights from Europe to this airport with origins including Barcelona, Copenhagen, London, Oslo, Paris and Stockholm. Also of note is that British Airways flies here from London.

After arriving, your best bet for completing the final leg of your trip to the Florida Keys is to rent a car and hit the road. Those coming from the airport in Fort Lauderdale should take Interstate 595 west to the Florida Turnpike before heading south and following the signs to your destination. If driving from the airport in Miami, head south on LeJeune Road until you get to State Road 836. Take that west until hitting the Florida Turnpike. Once heading south on there, follow the signs, and you will be in the Florida Keys shortly.

Another option for getting from the airport is a shuttle bus. Keys Shuttle provides transportation from both of those major airports to Key Largo, Tavernier, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and Key West. Greyhound can take you from downtown Fort Lauderdale and from Miami’s airport to Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and Key West.

Mangrove Marina

Of course, if you want to spend some time at Mangrove Marina, you’re going to need to get to Mile Marker 91.7 in Tavernier. This destination is a beautiful, peaceful locale that provides visitors from near and far with plenty of opportunities to view wildlife such as manatees and dolphins during the day and gaze up at the stars each night, all while being surrounded by friendliness and warmth.

One of the best features of Mangrove Marina is that visitors can stay in houseboats, providing them with the perfect Keys experience. There’s nothing quite like rocking to sleep and then starting the day by enjoying the warm waters without even needing to leave the accommodations. Aboard these boats are outdoor patios, beds, tables and televisions.
